Tokio Hotel Talks New Album, L.A., Adam Lambert & More

Starpulse recently had the chance to chat with Tokio Hotel band members Bill Kaulitz, Tom Kaulitz, Georg Listing, and Gustav Schafer. The German pop quartet emerged on the American music radar when they pulled out an upset win over Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and Jordin Sparks for "Best New Artist" at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.

The guys were great to chat with and Bill, the eccentric lead singer (who did most of the talking), let us in on one of his styling secrets, what band he's been listening to recently, Adam Lambert, and the making of their recent album, "Humanoid."

Starpulse reporter Phil McRae caught up with the band, here's what transpired...


Starpulse: How are you guys liking Los Angeles?
- Bill Kaulitz: Oh, it's great. I think the weather is actually really cool. In Germany, it's really cold right now, so it's good to be here.

I was in Germany a couple months ago and went to Berlin for five days and thought it was great.
- BK: Oh, you liked it, yeah?

Absolutely. Are you guys from around there? Do you ever hang out in Berlin?
- BK: No, most of the time we are in Hamburg; that's where we have most of our studios. So, yeah, we spend most of our time in Hamburg when we're in Germany.

I've been listening to the new album, "Humanoid," lately and like it a lot. It differs from your first English-version album, "Scream" - is that something you were doing on purpose, or did it just work out that way?
- BK: You know, I think it just happened in the studio. The first English record was like a 'Best Of' from our first two German albums ["Schrei" (2005) and "Zimmer 483" (2007)] and we just translated everything. We weren't sure what the new album would be like, and originally we planned to do something new - something fresh. We decided to go to the studio for one year and we produced and wrote songs and wanted to be creative. The goal was to try things out. We have a lot of different versions from every song, and ["Humanoid"] is more electronic than the other records. There was nothing planned. It was just something different.

Was there a concept behind the album?
- BK: No, not really a concept. It just happened in the studio. I think the most important thing is that we had time to produce and write. Maybe the record company hates us now because they expected the record half a year earlier. For us, it was more important to have the time. And like I said, we needed one year to produce this record. I think in the future it will also be like that, so we have enough time to produce and write.

Is that something the band prides itself on - not listening to exactly what the studio wants? It's just whatever comes naturally?
- BK: Yeah, I think that's important, so we have no record company that is talking to us about our music - that is something we hate, when other people want to talk about that. I think it's important that you do your stuff and you like it. We don't think about other people. We just do our stuff, and when we're happy with that, we know it's going to be good.
- Tom Kaulitz: I think if you love [the music], then other people can love it.

After looking at some fan sites, it sounds like Tokio Hotel loves performing and being on stage. What do you guys like about that so much?
- BK: I think that it's something hot - like music and being on stage - that's why we do all of this. You know, I think the promotion stuff and photos shoots and interviews, that's just a part of it. But the most important thing for us is to really be on stage and to make music.
- TK: The energy and the reaction of the fans, and having our own production and our own stage, and being on the road for months - that's what's great.

Bill, I like the look you have going on. Do you think Adam Lambert is trying to copy you?
- BK: I don't know, I'm not sure. I haven't seen older pictures of him. [Haha]

Do you know who he is?
- BK: Yeah, I know who he is. People have told me about that. We have that same show ["American Idol"] in Germany. I don't know how he looked before, so I don't know if he stole my look. Maybe he's just wearing makeup all the time like me. I started to wear makeup when I was - I think - 12 years old, so I don't know what his background is.

Do you have an inspiration behind the look?
- BK: I really love vampires, so it started with a Halloween party and I went to it as a vampire. After that, I started wearing makeup and polish my nails and everything.

Are you excited for the new "Twilight" movie?
- BK: Yeah. I saw the first one and it was really good. So I want to see the new one as well.

Have you ever heard of the TV show "True Blood"?
- BK: Yeah, I heard about it, but I've never seen it. I think it's not out in Europe.

- BK: OK, cool.

My girlfriend is always telling me I need to use more hair product. Do you have any advice?
- BK: [Haha] I just use one bottle of hairspray every day.

Wow. A full bottle?
- BK: Yes, every day is a different kind. So I don't have like [a] company or anything [to recommend].

Will Tokio Hotel be touring in the U.S. anytime soon?
- BK: We hope so. We just scheduled our European tour, and so we'll be doing that for 2010 and it'll be huge. We go to a lot of countries, and we hope that after the European tour we come to the U.S. We really want to.

Do you have a favorite place to perform in the U.S. - a favorite city?
- BK: I really like all of the huge cities, so I really love New York and L.A. - and Chicago was great and San Francisco. I think all of the huge cities are incredible.

Do you guys have a few bands that you really loved when you were growing up, someone who has inspired your music?
- BK: I think everyone listened to different music, and it's really hard for us to pick one band. For me, I've never had like one role model or something, but I listened to David Bowie and the Stereophonics. And at the moment, I really like Kings of Leon. They're really different and I really like their music.

Anything else going on with the new album release?
- BK: No, I think we're just focusing on the tour now. And the record is working very well in every country, and we're really proud of it. Right now, it's a really important and exciting time for us because we've been working for such a long time on this record and put so much into it. We're proud that everyone likes it so much. Now we're focused on the life process and the tour.

What English-version album are you guys most proud of?
- BK: That's really hard to say. I think we like all of our albums - they're all great - but at the moment I think we're really happy with the new one.

Starpulse : Est-ce que vous aimez Los Angeles ?
Bill Kaulitz : Oh, c'est génial. Je trouve que le temps est assez bon. En Allemagne, il fait très froid en ce moment, donc c'est bien d'être ici.

J'ai été en Allemagne il y a quelques mois de cela, je suis passé par Berlin, et j'ai trouvé ça super.
BK : Oh, tu as vraiment aimé ?

Absolument. Vous êtes de la région [de Berlin] ? Vous êtes déjà allés à Berlin ?
BK : Non, la plupart du temps, nous étions à Hambourg ; c'est là-bas que se situent la plupart de nos studios. Donc oui, nous passons la plupart de notre temps à Hambourg quand nous nous rendons en Allemagne.

J'ai dernièrement écouté le nouvel album, "Humanoid", et je l'ai beaucoup aimé. C'est différent de votre premier album anglais, "Scream" - c'est quelque chose que vous avez fait délibérément, ou alors ça s'est passé comme ça, naturellement ?
BK : Tu sais, je pense que ça s'est juste passé en studio. Le premier CD en anglais était comme un "Best Of" de nos deux premiers albums allemands ["Schrei" (2005) et "Zimmer 483" (2007)], et nous avons juste tout traduit. Nous n'étions pas sûrs de ce que donnerait le nouvel album, et au tout début, nous avions prévu de faire quelque chose de nouveau - quelque chose de frais. Nous avons décidé d'aller en studio pendant un an, nous avons produit, nous avons écrit des chansons, et nous voulions être créatifs. L'objectif était d'essayer des choses. Nous avons beaucoup de versions différentes de chaque chanson, et ["Humanoid"] est plus électronique que les autres albums. Rien n'était prévu. C'était juste quelque chose de différent.

Y a-t-il eu un concept derrière l'album ?
BK : Non, ce n'est pas vraiment un concept. C'est juste arrivé en studio. Je pense que la chose la plus importante, c'est que nous avons eu du temps pour produire et écrire. Peut-être que la maison de disques nous déteste maintenant, parce qu'ils attendaient l'album six mois avant. Pour nous, c'était plus important d'avoir le temps. Et comme je l'ai dit, nous avions besoin d'un an pour produire cet album. Je pense qu'à l'avenir, ce sera aussi ainsi, comme ça nous aurons assez de temps pour écrire et produire.

C'est quelque chose dont le groupe est fier - ne pas faire exactement ce que veut la maison de disques ? Ou alors ça vient juste tout seul ?
BK : Oui, je pense que c'est important, comme ça nous n'avons pas de maison de disques qui nous parle de notre musique - c'est quelque chose que nous détestons, quand les gens veulent parler de ça. Pour moi, c'est important de faire ses affaires de son côté et d'aimer. Nous ne pensons pas aux autres. Nous faisons juste ce que nous faisons, et quand les gens en sont satisfaits, nous savons que ça va être bien.
Tom Kaulitz : Je pense que si on aime [la musique], alors d'autres gens peuvent l'aimer.

Après avoir parcouru quelques sites tenus par des fans, j'ai l'impression que Tokio Hotel adore jouer et être sur scène. Qu'est-ce que vous aimez tant dans ça ?
BK : Je pense que c'est quelque chose de superbe - aimer la musique et aimer être sur scène - c'est pourquoi nous faisons tout cela. Tu sais, je pense que tous les trucs de promotion, les photoshoots et les interviews, ce n'est qu'une partie. Mais le plus important pour nous est d'être vraiment sur scène et de faire de la musique.
TK : L'énergie et la réaction des fans, le fait d'avoir nos propres compos et notre propre scène, le fait d'être sur la route pendant des mois - c'est ce qui est cool.

Bill, j'aime bien le look que tu as. Tu penses qu'Adam Lambert essaie de te copier ?
BK : Je ne sais pas, je ne suis pas sûr. Je n'ai pas vu des photos plus vieilles de lui, pour comparer. (rires)

Tu sais qui c'est ?
BK : Oui, je sais. On m'en a parlé. Nous avons nous aussi cette émission ["American Idol"] en Allemagne. Je ne sais pas comment il s'habillait avant, donc je ne sais pas s'il m'a volé mon look. Peut-être qu'il porte juste tout le temps du maquillage, comme moi. J'ai commencé à me maquiller quand j'avais - je pense - 12 ans, donc je ne sais pas comment il était avant.

Tu as une inspiraiton pour ce look ?
BK : J'aime beaucoup les vampires, donc ça a commencé avec une fête d'Halloween, et j'y suis allé déguisé en vampire. Après ça, j'ai commencé à me maquiller, à me vernir les ongles, et tout ça.

Tu es pressé de voir le nouveau film de [la saga] "Twilight" ?
BK : Oui. J'ai vu le premier, et je l'ai trouvé bien. Donc je veux aussi voir le nouveau.

Tu as déjà entendu parler de la série télévisée "True Blood" ?
BK : Oui, j'en ai entendu parler, mais je n'ai jamais regardé. Je ne pense pas que ça soit diffusé en Europe.

Tu devrais regarder, juste jeter un oeil.
BK : Ok, cool.

Ma copine me dit toujours que je devrais utiliser plus de produit pour mes cheveux. Tu as des conseils pour moi ?
BK : (rires) J'utilise une bouteille de laque chaque jour.

Wow, une bouteille entière ?
BK : Oui, chaque jour, j'en change. Donc je n'ai pas de marque ou quoique ce soit [à recommander].

Est-ce que Tokio Hotel va bientôt partir en tournée aux US ?
BK : Nous espérons. Nous n'avons plannifié que la tournée européenne, nous allons faire ça en 2010, ce sera énorme. Nous allons dans beaucoup de pays, et nous espérons qu'après la tournée européenne, nous viendrons aux US. Nous le voulons vraiment.

Est-ce que vous avez un endroit favori pour jouer aux US - une ville favorite ?
BK : J'aime beaucoup toutes les grandes villes, donc j'aime beaucoup New York et L.A. - et Chicago était génial, ainsi que San Francisco. Je trouve que toutes les grandes villes sont incroyables.

Est-ce qu'il y a des groupes que vous aimiez beaucoup quand vous étiez plus jeunes, des groupes qui ont inspiré votre musique ?
BK : Tout le monde écoute de la musique différente, et c'est dur pour nous de ne choisir qu'un groupe. Moi, je n'ai jamais eu de modèle ni rien, mais j'écoutais David Bowie et The Stereophonics. Et en ce moment, j'aime beaucoup Kings of Leon. Ils sont très différents, et j'aime beaucoup leur musique.

Il y a autre chose qui se passe avec la sortie du nouvel album ?
BK : Non, nous nous concentrons juste sur la tournée maintenant. Et l'album marche très bien dans tous les pays, et nous en sommes très fiers. Maintenant, c'est un moment très important et excitant pour nous, parce que nous avons travaillé un très long moment sur cet album, et nous y avons mis beaucoup du nôtre. Nous sommes fiers, beaucoup de gens l'aiment. Maintenant, nous nous concentrons vraiment sur la tournée.

Parmi vos deux albums anglais, quel est celui dont vous êtes les plus fiers ?
BK : C'est dur à dire. Nous aimons tous nos albums - ils sont tous géniaux - mais là, je pense que nous sommes très satisfaits du nouveau.
